Ground stabilization, Höchst Industrial Park

The Frankfurt Höchst Industrial Park is a major chemical and pharmaceutical hub in the heart of Europe. It offers research and manufacturing companies ideal conditions thanks to its well-developed infrastructure, connections to international transport routes, and proximity to key supply, sales, and financial markets. This makes it one of the most efficient industrial parks in Europe.

Ground stabilization, Höchst Industrial Park

In the Frankfurt Höchst industrial park, decades of dense development meant that expansion was only possible by constructing underground structures beneath existing buildings. The aim was to create space for an additional unit beneath the floor level of an existing production hall. The implementation was planned as a mining-style undercutting, which meant that existing socket foundations—reinforced individual foundations with openings for clamping supports—had to be protected against sinking or slipping.

The injection products WEBAC 2061 (a polymer-modified alkali silicate) and WEBAC 4170 (an epoxy resin) had already been used successfully in earlier projects on the company premises to stabilize wall areas. Tests confirmed excellent strength values.
In the current project, WEBAC 2061 also delivered very good results in supplementary laboratory tests with graded quartz sand. Due to its low viscosity and proven effectiveness, it was used for backfilling and solidification of the soil beneath the foundations.

The two-component injection system WEBAC 2061 is ideal for increasing the load-bearing capacity of building sites, especially in the case of non-cohesive to weakly cohesive sands, gravels, and sand-gravel mixtures. It is also successfully used for solidification of concrete, masonry, and porous natural stone.
The injection was carried out in accordance with the construction progress for each foundation. The injection lances (2 m long) were arranged vertically in a fan shape for edge stabilization and horizontally for securing below the foundations. Construction of the next foundation section could continue the day after the injection.

Since an alternative underpinning method would have involved considerable risks of structural damage as well as high time and cost expenditures, the selected injection method proved to be a significantly more efficient solution. It enabled the rapid, safe, and economical implementation of the expansion measure in the Frankfurt Höchst industrial park.

Products Used

  • Epoxy Injection Resins

    WEBAC® 4170

    • Classic Line

WEBAC 4170 is a CE-certified, very low-viscosity epoxy injection resin with good penetration. It penetrates even the finest cracks, cures to a solid state, and ensures a durable bond through optimal wetting and adhesion, even on dry or wet crack surfaces. It is used for closing, sealing, and structural force-fitting of structural components and is also suitable for crack filling.
