Injection of oil-contaminated cracks in a steel mill

The Dutch steelworks produces steel and rolled products and uses considerable amounts of oil to operate the rollers. During operation, unwanted oil leaks occurred, which penetrated cracks and porous areas in the concrete and entered the supply line area. This significantly impaired the production process.

Crack Repair
Injection of oil-contaminated cracks in a steel mill

The steelworks had to contend with oil-contaminated concrete cracks. The leaked oils had impaired the functionality and safety of the facilities. The following remediation measures were carried out to permanently eliminate this problem:

  • First, the affected, contaminated surfaces were thoroughly cleaned with soapy water.
  • The existing cracks and gravel pockets in the concrete were drilled into from the side, and then WEBAC packers without nipples were inserted.
  • The surfaces were then filled with approximately 2 mm of WEBAC 4525 special filler, which is compatible with moisture.
  • After hardening, the first packer was fitted with a nipple to inject water until clear water emerged from the next packer. This procedure was applied equally to all packers and cracks.
  • After completing this “pre-injection,” the special injection resin WEBAC 4170 was then injected in the same manner.

Treatment with WEBAC 4170, which binds both water and oil without emulsification, created a durable, structural bond and thus a sustainable solution to the existing problem.

Products Used

  • Epoxy Injection Resins

    WEBAC® 4170

    • Classic Line

WEBAC 4170 is a CE-certified, very low-viscosity epoxy injection resin with good penetration. It penetrates even the finest cracks, cures to a solid state, and ensures a durable bond through optimal wetting and adhesion, even on dry or wet crack surfaces. It is used for closing, sealing, and structural force-fitting of structural components and is also suitable for crack filling.

  • Epoxy Putties and Adhesives

    WEBAC® 4525

    • Classic Line

WEBAC 4525 is a non-drip, universal epoxy putty. It cures into a solid mass with high chemical resistance and can be applied even on damp substrates and in areas exposed to water. It is particularly suitable for bonding mineral building materials and for crack sealing.

  • Injection Packers

    WEBAC® Injection Packers

    • Classic Line
    • Consolidation Line

WEBAC injection packers are filling nozzles that serve as a connecting element between the injection pump and the structural component. They are available in various designs—such as Drill hole packers or surface packers—depending on the type of injection material and the requirements of the structural component. The packers are characterized by secure attachment within the structural element as well as high pressure and corrosion resistance (stainless steel or aluminum versions).
