The historic city moat in Eutin, located in the Holstein Switzerland Nature Park, is a key component of the city’s infrastructure. Partly man-made and partly natural, the canal connects the Small and Large Eutin Lakes and plays a central role in draining the Old Town. Originally, it also served as a natural barrier to the marshy surrounding area, making city walls or ramparts unnecessary.

The city moat in Eutin had sustained significant structural damage due to decades of settlement in the subsoil. This settlement was caused by the loss of pore water in the subsoil as a result of increasing development. Consequently, the masonry shifted, cavities/voids formed, and leaks developed both at the base and along the side walls. The structural stability of the masonry canal was thus significantly compromised.
As part of the renovation work, the canal was first reinforced to ensure structural safety during construction. The cavities/voids were then filled with a cement slurry. For permanent waterproofing and stabilization, the PU injection resin WEBAC 1440 was used, which is characterized by its moisture reactivity. The material reacts with existing moisture in the structure and forms closed air pores, enabling an effective combination of flexibility and impermeability.
After the cement slurry had set, the masonry joints and the gaps between the cavities/voids and the vault were injected with WEBAC 1440.
Despite the confined space, the injection work was successfully completed.

PU Injection Resins
WEBAC 1440 is a highly flexible PU injection resin that forms a tear-resistant foam structure and is particularly suitable for structures with cavities/voids. It cures with constant volume to form a chemically highly resistant resin that stabilizes porous masonry and increases its strength and waterproofing properties. It is used for closing, sealing, and creating limited-elasticity joints between building components and is suitable as a post-construction damp proof course (dpc) against capillary rising damp in various types of masonry.
