External waterproofing, town hall in Berlin

Köpenick Town Hall was built in 1905 in the Brandenburg brick Gothic style. Extensive additions were made in the 1920s and 1930s. The building is notable for its unique location on the banks of the Spree River, which exposes it to highly fluctuating groundwater levels.

External waterproofing, town hall in Berlin

During inspections of the exterior waterproofing in 2013, Köpenick Town Hall revealed significant damage to the existing old waterproofing.  Completely removing the damaged old waterproofing in order to install new, pressure-water-resistant exterior waterproofing would have been extremely time-consuming and costly.
WEBAC 5611 was chosen as an efficient and safe alternative. This product provides reliable waterproofing as it is resistant to both the old waterproofing and pressurized groundwater.

The renovation was carried out in several steps:

  • Floor excavated, dilapidated components dismantled
  • Sealing surfaces cleaned
  • Primer coat applied with WEBAC 5611 without cement content
  • Hollow cove created
  • WEBAC 5611 (1 mm layer thickness) applied
  • Backfill protection installed

WEBAC 5611 is a reactive bitumen-acrylate dispersion that adheres well to a wide variety of substrates and has crack-bridging properties. The hydrophobic effect of the bitumen component creates a waterproof seal with reliable protection against leaching by salts harmful to structures. This makes WEBAC 5611 suitable for surface waterproofing against hydrostatic pressure in building construction, civil engineering, and historic preservation.
