Renovation of a historic castle complex, Bergedorf Castle

Bergedorf Castle, built in the early 13th century, is the only completely preserved castle complex in Hamburg.
Over the centuries, numerous renovations and weathering have greatly altered the appearance and structure of the former fortress. In order to preserve this unique cultural monument for the long term, a comprehensive general renovation was necessary.

Renovation of a historic castle complex, Bergedorf Castle

Bergedorf Castle had significant moisture problems in the basement walls and vaults. Test drilling showed that the exterior walls were partially multi-layered and up to 1.85 m thick, with cavities/voids of up to 30 cm.
To ensure permanent waterproofing of the walls, targeted renovation was carried out using WEBAC products. The concept combined PU resins and acrylate gels to optimally seal the different building structures.

Sealing measures carried out:

  • Water stop with WEBAC 150
    • The stopping of pressing water was achieved using WEBAC 150 PU injection foam resin.
    • Due to the strong foaming (up to 40 times expansion), even large cavities/voids could be filled economically.
  • Damp proof courses with WEBAC 1403
    • The proven PU injection resin WEBAC 1403 was used for the post-construction damp proof course (dpc). A total of 115 m² of masonry was permanently sealed.
  • Surface sealing with WEBAC 250
    • The polyacrylate gel WEBAC 250 was used for the thicker walls. Due to its extremely low viscosity, it spread over a large area of the masonry even at low pressures. This protected the plaster and masonry structure and enabled complete sealing.

The basement waterproofing of Bergedorf Castle has been successfully completed, enabling the castle to continue fulfilling its historical function—as an attractive backdrop for weddings and as a well-preserved cultural monument in Hamburg.

Products Used

  • PU Injection Foam Resins

    WEBAC® 150

    • Classic Line

WEBAC 150 is a versatile PU injection foam resin (SPU) that is particularly valued for its safe and easy application. Upon contact with water, it cures with significant expansion to form a surface-tight, firm-elastic foam with a very fine-cell structure. This makes it suitable for the rapid, temporary closure and sealing of pressurized water-bearing cracks, cavities/voids, and leaks in building construction, civil engineering, bridge construction, and tunnel construction.

  • PU Injection Resins

    WEBAC® 1403

    • Classic Line

WEBAC 1403 is a long-track-record proven PU injection resin, particularly valued for its safe and controlled application. Upon contact with water, it cures into a closed, waterproof, and dimensionally stable resin with a fine pore structure. It is suitable for sealing, crack injection, and stabilizing masonry and concrete, and is used for post-construction damp proof courses (dpc) against capillary rising damp.

  • Acrylat Gels

    WEBAC® 250

    • Classic Line

WEBAC 250 is a very low-viscosity polyacrylate injection gel with excellent penetrating ability that penetrates even the finest pores of mineral substrates. After curing, it hardens into a waterproof, firm-elastic gel with high elasticity and good adhesion to both dry and wet substrates. It is particularly suitable for post-construction damp proof courses (dpc) and for large-area waterproofing in masonry.
