Renovation of a tourist restaurant, "Zur historischen Mühle" Potsdam

The restaurant “Zur Historischen Mühle” was built in 1908 on the initiative of Emperor Wilhelm II as a destination for day trippers and looks back on an eventful history. Due to significant structural defects, the listed building had to be closed in 1996. Two years later, in 1998, extensive renovation work began to preserve the historic complex. Today, the restaurant and beer garden are among the most popular destinations in the region.

Renovation of a tourist restaurant, "Zur historischen Mühle" Potsdam

During the renovation of the restaurant “Zur Historischen Mühle,” the focus was on protecting against moisture in order to preserve the substance in the long term. The measures carried out were aimed at permanently preventing moisture ingress while preserving the historic character of the building.

Exterior wall waterproofing
against ground moisture/surface water

  • 1 - WEBAC 5611 applied from the foundation to the top edge of the base molding
  • 2 - Perimeter insulation
  • 3 - WEBAC 1403 injected (post-construction damp proof course (dpc))
  • 4 - WEBAC 5611 applied internally
  • 5 - KEIM contact paint (lime-casein)
  • 6 - Interior wall plaster
  • 7 - Composite screed

Plinth sealing
against ground moisture/surface water

  • 8 - WEBAC 1403 injected (post-construction damp proof course (dpc))
  • 9 - WEBAC 5611 applied, from the foundation to the top edge of the base cornice
  • 10 - KEIM contact paint (lime-casein)

Overview of measures implemented:

  • The basement wall construction, columns, and splash base were permanently protected against moisture.
  • In the representative facade area, the historic paintwork was treated with a reversible protection system.
  • The splash base was given a customized protective coating in combination with the exterior wall waterproofing.

Materials and processes used:

  • Application of WEBAC 5611 from the foundation to the upper edge of the base cornice
  • Perimeter insulation to optimize moisture protection
  • Injection of WEBAC 1403 to create a post-construction damp proof course (dpc)
  • Renewed application of WEBAC 5611 in the interior
  • Use of KEIM contact paint on a lime-casein basis

After more than 10 years, the waterproofing measures were inspected. They were still in perfect condition—proof of the lasting effectiveness of the renovation measures.

Products Used

  • PU Injection Resins

    WEBAC® 1403

    • Classic Line

WEBAC 1403 is a long-track-record proven PU injection resin, particularly valued for its safe and controlled application. Upon contact with water, it cures into a closed, waterproof, and dimensionally stable resin with a fine pore structure. It is suitable for sealing, crack injection, and stabilizing masonry and concrete, and is used for post-construction damp proof courses (dpc) against capillary rising damp.

  • Dispersion for Walls and Floors

    WEBAC® 5611

    • Classic Line

WEBAC 5611 is a reactive bitumen-acrylate dispersion that adheres well to a wide variety of substrates and has crack-bridging properties. The hydrophobic effect of the bitumen component creates a waterproof seal with reliable protection against leaching by salts harmful to structures. This makes WEBAC 5611 suitable for surface waterproofing against hydrostatic pressure in building construction, civil engineering, and historic preservation.
