Horizontal waterproofing, Neue Wache Berlin

The Neue Wache in Berlin, located on the historic boulevard Unter den Linden, is one of the most important buildings of German classicism. Built between 1816 and 1818 according to designs by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the building originally served as a guardhouse for the royal guard.
Over the course of its history, the Neue Wache has been redesigned several times, severely damaged during World War II, and subsequently rebuilt. Today, the building houses the “Central Memorial of the Federal Republic of Germany for the Victims of War and Tyranny.”

Horizontal waterproofing, Neue Wache Berlin

Over the years, rising damp and water damage caused by the masonry led to significant deterioration of the building fabric. The solid wall areas and underground passageways of the Neue Wache were particularly affected, requiring restoration due to severe moisture penetration.

During a five-month renovation phase, the moisture in the masonry was systematically reduced. Due to the special geometry of the building with narrow corridors and wall thicknesses of up to 170 cm, precise technical implementation was required. The drilling for the injection technique could only be carried out with specially manufactured drilling tools.

WEBAC 250 polyacrylate gel was used to create a horizontal seal. This low-viscosity, elastic injection gel is particularly suitable for sealing capillary moisture paths in historic masonry.

The bitumen-acrylate dispersion WEBAC 5611 was also used to seal the floor. These measures effectively reduced the moisture load in the historic masonry. The renovation, which was carried out in accordance with monument preservation guidelines, meets the technical requirements for moisture protection and contributes to the long-term preservation of the classicist building.

Products Used

  • Dispersion for Walls and Floors

    WEBAC® 5611

    • Classic Line

WEBAC 5611 is a reactive bitumen-acrylate dispersion that adheres well to a wide variety of substrates and has crack-bridging properties. The hydrophobic effect of the bitumen component creates a waterproof seal with reliable protection against leaching by salts harmful to structures. This makes WEBAC 5611 suitable for surface waterproofing against hydrostatic pressure in building construction, civil engineering, and historic preservation.

  • Acrylat Gels

    WEBAC® 250

    • Classic Line

WEBAC 250 is a very low-viscosity polyacrylate injection gel with excellent penetrating ability that penetrates even the finest pores of mineral substrates. After curing, it hardens into a waterproof, firm-elastic gel with high elasticity and good adhesion to both dry and wet substrates. It is particularly suitable for post-construction damp proof courses (dpc) and for large-area waterproofing in masonry.
